The rain stopped overnight. The grass on the long lawn is so green it looks fake.
The Marlowes' driver, José, takes us in the Suburban. I sit in the back. Margot sits next to me with her test admission ticket clenched in her hand, knuckles ash-blue. She is in my Ashford uniform — the four-year-worn navy blazer with the shiny elbows, the white oxford with the faint coffee stain in the cuff, the gray skirt. I had Maria iron it; it does not iron flat.
When the Suburban pulls up to the front gates of Ashford Hall, every student and parent in the turnaround circle looks up.
Because the figure who steps out of the Marlowe family's car is Sara Mendez.
And the girl who steps out behind her is Margot Marlowe.
"Why is Mendez riding in their car?"
"Didn't Margot catch her stealing something?"
"You hear Hadley got arrested last night?"
Margot's footsteps shorten. The eyes are on her face, on what they think is my face, for the first time in her life. The whispers are about her, and they are not generous.
I walk beside her. I drop my voice.
"Don't panic. This is the easy part."
She goes whiter.
At the gate Dean Caldwell is already moving across the gravel, in a wool dress with a Hermès scarf knotted at the throat. She comes to me first — to the face she recognizes.
"Margot, sweetheart, what on earth. Your mother called me at midnight. How are you feeling?"
She is reaching to touch my cheekbone.
Her eyes catch on the admission ticket in Margot's hand. Margot is wearing my body, the body Dean Caldwell has spent four years telling to ride it out, and the ticket has my face on it.
Her face does something complicated.
"Sara," she says, softly. "You — they found it."
Margot's voice is small. "Yes."
I look at Dean Caldwell.
"You knew her admission packet was missing."
Dean Caldwell's mouth opens, and the smile catches.
"Sara was here for four hours yesterday afternoon," I say. "She checked every locker on the upper-school side. Why didn't anyone help her pull the hallway camera footage?"
The students nearest us have gone quiet.
Dean Caldwell drops her voice. "Margot. Sweetheart. This is not the moment —"
I pull out my phone. I hold it up. I tap the play arrow.
Hadley's voice, slightly distorted by the cheap recording: I told you I'd take care of it. She isn't getting on a plane to Cambridge in August.
It is not loud.
It is loud enough.
Dean Caldwell's face whitens.
"Margot. That — there must be a misunderstanding —"
Margot — Margot wearing my body, with my voice, my dry voice that I have not consciously taught her but which her mouth is beginning to know — says it.
"It's not a misunderstanding, Dean Caldwell."
She is looking at the Dean. Her hand is shaking but her sentence is steady.
"When I came to your office," she says, "you told me to ride it out. Every single time."
She is using my exact words. The line lands on Dean Caldwell's face like an open hand.
The students near the gate have all stopped walking.
I see the panic move in Dean Caldwell's eyes.
It is so satisfying I have to look down at my shoes.
I sit at desk 14 in the AP Calc BC testing room because the seat assignment on Margot's ticket says so.
The proctor checks her ID across the rim of his half-glasses. "Marlowe?"
I nod.
The packet comes down the row. I pick up the pencil. The bubble sheet looks back at me. I have not signed up to take AP Calc this spring; I am taking AP Stats and AP Lang and AP Calc AB, all in two weeks. But I know AP Calc BC, because I learned the BC material on my own freshman year out of a library copy, because the magnet school I came from did not offer it and Ashford did and I wanted to be ready.
I hold the pencil over the NAME line.
Margot Marlowe, says the answer document.
If I write her name and ace it, the score goes on her transcript. The road gets a little wider in front of her.
The bell has been ringing for five minutes already.
I write MARLOWE, MARGOT on the line.
I'm not doing it for her.
I'm doing it because I want to know that even with someone else's name on the page I can still stand at the top of the class.
The free-response section asks about a vector function. I write three pages of work in handwriting that is not Margot's, that will never be Margot's. The proctors will figure it out eventually; that is fine. That is even, in the long run, an asset.
At the end of the section, there is a moment of quiet.
Six rows back I hear a single suppressed sob.
I turn my head.
Margot, in my body, is at desk 41. She is holding a pencil and her hand is shaking. The note-taking handwriting on her scratch paper is not the handwriting that won me three semesters of math department prizes. It is hers — round, slow, undecided.
She has no idea how I take notes. She has no muscle memory. She has none of the three years of grit that taught me to keep going after my hand cramped.
She had thought, for three years, that destroying one piece of paper of mine could destroy my whole life.
Now she is sitting in my life, and every problem on the test has no exit.
The bell rings. The proctor calls time.
In the hallway she catches up to me at the water fountain.
"AP Lang is at one," she whispers. "I — I don't think I can —"
"Then push through it."
"Sara, I'm serious. If your body bombs your AP, your final transcript —"
I look at her.
"Oh," I say. "So you know it's my life now."
She closes her mouth.
We come around the corner of the science building and Tabitha Voss is at the door of the upper school with the Voss family's white-shoe attorney from New Haven. She is in a Tory Burch quilted jacket. The attorney is in a Brooks Brothers suit, holding an iPad.
She points at me, at Margot's face, with a manicured finger.
"Margot Marlowe. You called the police on Hadley over the daughter of —" Her voice is climbing. "Over a scholarship student? Are you out of your mind?"
Half the upper-school courtyard has stopped moving.
Margot — in my body — steps between me and Tabitha.
The face I have worn for seventeen years is pale and the lip is split where Ray hit her.
She says it loud enough for the courtyard.
"Hadley stole my Common App packet."
A breath.
"It wasn't a prank, Mrs. Voss. It's a federal offense."
Tabitha Voss laughs once, the laugh of a woman who has rehearsed laughs. Then her face changes.
"Your mother is in the hospital, Sara. Your stepfather is a known drunk. And you think you're in any position to —"
She is saying this to my face. To Margot wearing my face. The Voss family register, full volume.
For three years no one has spoken to Margot Marlowe like this.
Tabitha lifts her hand.
She slaps for Margot's cheek.
I get there. I lock her wrist mid-arc. I am taller in Margot's body than I am in my own, by three inches.
"Mrs. Voss," I say, evenly. "There are cameras on this gate."
Her hand stops.
She turns to me. The face she gives me is the face she gives Margot. The honey is back, instant, the way Bunny did it in the corridor.
"Margot, sweetheart. Aunt Tabby has known you since cotillion. You can't let yourself get pulled into this. This girl is using you. You understand? She's trying to drag you under with her."
I let go of her wrist.
I say, "She's already under."
Tabitha blinks.
I take out my phone. I tap a different file in the cloud-drive folder Dr. Reiner sent me at five a.m.
The video on the screen is from the women's first-floor bathroom of the upper school. The angle is from the corner where the hallway ceiling meets the door. Hadley Voss and two girls have Sara — me, the actual me, freshman year — backed against the sink. Hadley is holding her phone up at me. Get on your knees. Clean my shoes. Margot says girls like you should know your place.
The crowd at the gate is now a wall.
Tabitha's face goes from white to red.
"Where did you get that footage. Where did you get that."
I look across the gate.
Dr. Reiner is standing just inside the visitor's entrance. Next to him is a woman in a State Department of Education badge on a lanyard. Behind her is a second woman in a navy windbreaker with NEW HAVEN POLICE — JUVENILE DIVISION across the back.
"Genetec keeps a redundant copy off-site," I say. "Connecticut requires it. The on-premise archive was wiped. The state's was not."
Dr. Reiner steps forward.
"The state has opened an investigation," he says. "I'm a mandated reporter. I filed at six a.m. They're going to pull the discipline records back four years."
Dean Caldwell is at the back of the crowd now. Her hand is on a railing. She does not look at anyone.
Tabitha Voss is shaking. The attorney puts a hand on her elbow and says something. She lets him steer her toward a black SUV in the visitor lot. She turns once and looks at Margot — at me, she thinks — and shapes a word with her mouth that does not reach sound.
Margot's knees go out from under her. I catch her. She is heavier in my body than she should be; the body is exhausted from a night of being beaten and a morning of being seen.
"Sara," she whispers. "All this time. They. They —"
"More than this," I say.
I help her sit on the bench by the auditorium steps.
The afternoon's AP Lang exam is in forty minutes.
She wipes her face with the back of her cuff. Then she reaches into the pocket of the Ashford blazer and pulls out a folded piece of paper. Notebook lined, torn out, the writing in a black gel pen.
"Sara," she says. "Last fall. The night Hadley locked you in the basement music room. I — I filmed it. With my phone. I gave Hadley the file. She said it'd be insurance, in case you ever tried to report anything else."
She holds the paper out.
"It's the iCloud login. The original is still in there. I never deleted it. The password is the same one you saw me type into your phone last night."
I take the paper.
The corners are damp where her hand was sweating.
She does not look at me.
"Sara. I want to help you press charges."
