Soft-Girl Arc Canceled

Jude takes the deal.

He doesn't say yes. He says, Show me your team. Which is yes in his dialect.

I lend him the top three associates from the Marlowe corporate desk. We meet in the East River boardroom most evenings. We model the short. We model the unwind. We model what happens if Cameron pulls a panic move three days early. We model what happens if he doesn't.

The Jude Ashford who walked into the boardroom on day one — the wary, contemptuous one — comes apart slowly across two weeks. What is underneath is sharper than I expected. He stops calling me Marlowe. He starts calling me by my first name when he is concentrating, the way you say a name when you're trying to remember to say it right. Once, between a model run and a coffee refill, I look up and he is just looking at me. Not at the screen. Not at his phone. At me.

"What kind of girl are you, exactly," he says quietly.

I do not look up from the spreadsheet.

"The kind who's about to win you four billion dollars."

He goes silent again. I let him.

Meanwhile, Sophie Linden's life is coming apart in slow motion.

Cass releases Queen as a streaming single in the second week of March. It debuts at number two on the classical-crossover chart and breaks into the Hot 100. He goes on the New York Public Radio Saturday show and the host asks him who the muse is. He says, An irreplaceable woman, and refuses to say more. Which, in modern internet, is the same as saying my name.

Shay's matte-black Aston Martin Vantage shows up in the senior parking lot the week of his commitment ceremony. Vanity plate BX 0314. Every prep-school kid with a finance dad in their group chat decodes it inside ninety minutes. BX as in Beatrix. 0314 as in March 14, her birthday. Shay is photographed leaning on the hood for Sports Illustrated and the photo runs the next morning.

Jude has not been to St. Cyprian's in three weeks. He does not call Sophie. He does not text her. He does not respond to the small daily mercies — the cookies in his locker, the thinking of you notes — she has been planting around him.

Sophie panics.

She does the thing she has always been best at. Which is sob into a microphone and watch the world line up to comfort her.

She posts on Cypress. Anonymous. The post is six paragraphs long and titled "to the girl who thinks she can buy our school". It does not name me, but it does not need to. It is the sob narrative of the modest scholarship girl, raised by a small-town pediatrician father, whose three best friends have been bought out from under her by a hedge-fund princess. It mentions a dead mother. It mentions praying about it. It mentions wondering if she should leave.

By dinner the post has four hundred and twelve sympathetic comments.

Get her out of St. Cyprian's.

Money doesn't mean you own people.

Beatrix Marlowe is what's wrong with this country.

I read it once on my phone in the senior gallery. I close the tab.

In The Bramble Crown, this is the chapter where Beatrix Marlowe loses her temper. She rage-comments. She doxxes. She ends up in the disciplinary committee's office by Monday morning. Expulsion processed by Friday. End of villain.

I do not lift a finger.

I don't have to. I have a court.

By eight a.m. the next morning, Cypress has flipped one hundred and eighty degrees.

First, Cass's online fans — and Queen on the Hot 100 has assembled a fan account — drop the full Showcase paper trail with the federal copyright registration. With Aria Pendleton's signature on the deposit. Scrubbed of personal info but ironclad on dates. Translation: Beatrix Marlowe is the reason Cassian Vance has a Curtis offer right now. Sophie Linden was nowhere on the document.

Second, Shay's college's NIL communications office posts a quietly devastating statement that Dr. Robert Chen of Hospital for Special Surgery, attending physician to the Marlowe family for over a decade, voluntarily took on a complimentary consult for Mr. Okafor in early March that is, in his judgment, the reason Mr. Okafor was on the floor in Atlanta. Translation: Beatrix Marlowe is the reason Shay Okafor still has a college career. Sophie Linden was nowhere near the operating room.

Third, around nine, the bomb that closes the topic.

Reeve Tanaka-Mercer drops into Cypress with a screenshot. The IP table from the back end of the platform. Login times, post IDs, IP-and-MAC pairs. Reeve is going to MIT in September; the back end of a school gossip site is what he does for fun on a Thursday.

The IP that posted the to the girl who thinks she can buy our school thread, at 7:42 p.m. the previous night, is on the Linden family Wi-Fi at 14 Hawthorne Lane, Hartford, Connecticut.

The thread is Sophie's own.

The internet does what the internet does.

The Sophie Linden myth ends with one screenshot at nine in the morning. No on-page redemption. No mercy.

By lunch, when she walks into the dining hall holding her tray, the room does not just go quiet. The room turns the way a flock of sparrows turns. She stands at the salad bar with her hands shaking, and not one person looks at her.

She walks toward our table.

I am at the long window, eating with Cass and Shay, who are now permanent fixtures at my elbow. Cass has his AirPods in, listening to a demo. Shay is signing a stack of fan mail.

Sophie stops in front of us. Eyes red. Voice trembling.

"Cass — Shay — please, I want to explain — the Cypress thing wasn't —"

Cass does not look up from the demo. He does not pretend to take out his AirPod. He simply — does nothing.

Shay does worse. Shay picks up his tray, gets up, walks across the dining hall to a table by the window, sits down with his back to her, and goes back to signing fan mail.

Sophie is still standing in front of me with the tray in her hands.

She is waiting for me to do what Beatrix Marlowe is supposed to do in the manuscript. Snarl. Mock. Sneer. Give her something. Anything. She wants the grace of a fight she can lose loudly.

I do not look up. I do not look up for so long that the room tightens around it. Then, eventually, I do look up. I look at her the way you look at a stranger who has stepped on your foot. A passing twitch of attention.

I look back down at my plate.

I take another bite.

The biggest insult is not screaming at her. It is treating her like furniture.

The dining hall is watching. Sophie's hands tighten on the tray. I hear it. The plastic squeals. Across the room a fork goes down.

"Marlowe!"

Sophie's voice cracks on the o. The tray comes up.

I do not flinch. I know whose hand is going to come down on hers before it lands.

A hand catches her wrist mid-air. The grip is fast and the grip is brutal. The tray stops two inches from my hairline.

Jude Ashford. Three weeks of corporate war on his face. Suit cut to the millimeter. Hair cut clean. Shoulders broader than he had them in October. He has aged about five years in twenty-one days.

He does not look at me.

He looks down at Sophie. Eyes the color of cold weather.

"Sophie."

His voice is empty.

"Don't touch her."

Three words.

The dining hall hears them, and what it hears is the sound of an entire chapter of a book being torn out and dropped on the floor. Jude Ashford. Sophie Linden's first knight. The character introduced in the manuscript with he had loved her since she was eleven years old and brought him a Band-Aid on the playground. That Jude Ashford. Just used a body that is not Sophie's body to mean protected.

Sophie's tears finally break.

Jude pulls Sophie's wrist away from him with enough force that she stumbles two steps back and almost goes down. Almost. The dining hall is so quiet you can hear her uneven breathing.

He turns his head to me. Just an inch. Just enough.

The look on his face is complicated. Some part appraisal. Some part warning. And underneath, a look I do not think he knows is there.

"You alright."

"With you here," I say, and I let the sentence land in the room, "what would happen to me."

His ears go red at the tip. He doesn't quite recover before he hides it. He pulls his eyes off me, away from Sophie, looks at his watch.

"Let's go. Board's in twenty."

"Mm."

I pick up my bag. Cass is already standing. Shay is already standing. The four of us walk out of the dining hall in a single line, around Sophie, past the long window, through the doors, out into the gray New England light. We do not look back.

Behind us I can feel Sophie's gaze on my spine. The way a knife feels when it has not yet been thrown.

Fine. Let her sharpen it. She has no court.

The Marlowe boardroom is bright with March sun by the time we get there. The associates have papered the long table. Bloomberg terminals open on three monitors. The chief financial analyst — a woman who joined Marlowe Holdings six months before I was born — runs the briefing from the top of the table.

"All positions confirmed. Cumberland, Sterling Asset, Belmont Group, Atlas Macro, Ridgeline Capital. Four billion notional. The five firms have agreed to coordinate on Monday's open. Simultaneously, our outside counsel will deliver to the SEC the Cumberland-Halberd Aux II filing chain at nine-fifteen Eastern. The agency will freeze Cameron Ashford's positions inside the hour. Margin call follows. Total wipe on the short by the eleven a.m. recovery."

"Probability of execution."

"Ten out of ten." I answer for her. "He's done."

Jude is at the floor-to-ceiling glass with his back to the room. The harbor is moving below us. He doesn't turn.

"How sure are you, really."

"Ten out of ten."

He turns. He is looking at me with something open. Something I have not seen on his face before. Not on anyone's face in three weeks.

"Trix. Thank you."

"Don't." I go to the window beside him. We are looking out at the same harbor. "It's a deal."

"What's the price." He does not say it ironically.

"The price." I turn my head, and I let the smile do the work. "You."

His breath catches.

"I'm already yours, aren't I." Quiet, with the shape of something self-mocking on it.

"No."

I shake my head.

"Right now you're a partner. What I want is your loyalty. The kind where I tell you to walk through a door and you walk through it without checking which side has the wolves."

I take a step forward. We are close enough that I can smell the cold and the cologne on him. Cedar, salt, something dry.

"Jude. Can you give me that."

His throat moves.

He starts to answer.

My phone rings.

I pull it out. Unknown caller. I almost decline. Then a small ugly thing in my stomach moves, and I pick up.

"Beatrix Marlowe."

"That's right."

A male voice. Middle-aged. The flat affect of someone who has rehearsed this call.

"If you don't want little brother Jude to die, you'll come alone to the old paper-mill warehouse, Hunts Point, South Bronx, river side. One hour."

In the background of the line — a grunt of pain. A young man's voice, choked, furious. Then a different laugh, younger and uglier, on top of it.

"Where's the fight now, brother? Where's the fight?"

It's Cameron.

I do not move my face. I look across the boardroom.

Jude is no longer at the window beside me.

When I went to the door of this room two minutes ago to take Cass on his way out, Jude said I'll be one minute, I'm grabbing a file from forty-six. He left through the side door. He has not come back.

Slow cold sliding in my throat.

"You have one hour," the voice says. "Come alone. Or you can come collect him in pieces."

The line goes dead.

I stand very still. The boardroom is staring at me. Cass is in the doorway with his cello case half over his shoulder, frozen. Shay's hand is halfway to a coffee cup.

"Trix." Shay first. "What."

I look at the chief financial analyst.

"Call my father. Tell him I need Pinnacle on a thirty-vehicle deployment to Hunts Point in forty minutes. Roof and front breach. I will give the go-signal from inside. No NYPD."

"Yes, ma'am."

"No NYPD," I repeat. "Cameron is desperate. Sirens spook him. He has a knife, he'll use it."

"Yes, ma'am."

"Notify the SEC desk that Monday's plan goes forward exactly as designed. Cameron does not know I know about Cumberland. The unwind runs on schedule."

"Yes, ma'am."

"Cass. Shay."

Both of them are staring at me.

"You two. Down to forty-six. There are six senior partners and the GC in the room. Whatever they are working on right now, you interrupt. You tell them the heir is missing, you tell them I'm handling it, you tell them their job between now and Monday morning is to keep the rest of this building from finding out. Show your faces. They need someone in a chair who looks like power. Shay, your name will do it. Cass, stand still and look beautiful. Go."

"Trix —" Cass starts.

"Go."

They go.

I lift my coat off the chair. I check the magazine of the small piece in the inside pocket — the one my father gave me for my sixteenth birthday and which my chief of detail makes me carry to anything off Park Avenue.

The script has slid off the rails. The Bramble Crown does not have this chapter. I have nothing to read ahead in. For the first time since I woke up inside this book, I am operating on no advance knowledge.

Difficult.

The first time the word has applied.

I take the elevator down.

Out loud, to no one, in the empty mirrored cab on the way to the garage:

"I'm going to bring my king home."
