The Long Gallery at Ashcombe Park smells of beeswax and old varnish, the way a chapel smells of incense — heavy, sweet, designed to lower the head of anyone who enters it. Seven generations of Carrow earls hang along the panelled walls, all painted in the same three-quarter pose, all looking somewhere past me.
I am seated at the foot of the refectory table on a backless oak bench. My cup is pewter. The Carrows' cups are silver. My right hand rests against my stomach, which is barely showing under the dove-grey muslin. The other hand is in my lap, holding nothing at all.
Above us, at the head of the table, Sir Henry Carrow has folded his magistrate's hands like a man waiting to hear a confession. At his right, in the chair the lady of the house should occupy, sits the Dowager Lady Helena, my husband's aunt, in a pelisse the colour of dried blood. At his left, my husband — Adrian Carrow, eighth Earl of Ashcombe — wears a black coat without a speck of dust on it and an expression cold enough to set the candles guttering.
Mr. Quilter, the family solicitor, stands at the wall behind Adrian. He will not meet my eye. I have not given him reason to, yet.
Julian Carrow stands halfway down the table. He is the only one of them not seated. He likes to be standing when he throws things.
"Cousin," he says to Adrian, smiling the smile he keeps for friendly dispossession, "the whole of the ton is satisfied you are an ascetic. The Marble Earl, three years married without ever appearing in public with his lady. No mistress, no flirt, not so much as a glance at the opera." He turns the smile on me — pleasant, almost solicitous. "Then how is it, cousin, that your secret countess is breeding?"
He produces, from inside his coat, a single sheet of cream paper folded once. He sets it on the boards and gives it a small flick. It slides down the polished oak, past the silver epergne, past the candlesticks, and stops in front of Adrian.
The Carrow signet on Sir Henry's hand catches the candlelight as he leans forward to read the heading.
It is from Dr. Margate, of Harley Street. The most discreet accoucheur in London. Three weeks ago he confirmed, in writing, a pregnancy now in its twelfth week.
The gallery goes off like a powder magazine.
"A secret countess —"
"You married without informing the trustees?"
"Under the patriarch's deed, an undeclared marriage forfeits the heir's voice in trust —"
"And a child by it — what does that make the child — "
The voices climb the panelled walls and bounce off the painted earls. I sit very still and look at the dust on the silver epergne. There is none. The housekeeper at Ashcombe Park does not permit dust.
For three years I have lived in the Mayfair house on Grosvenor Street alone. The first quarter after my "wedding," the pin-money came in a sealed packet, brought by Mr. Beasley the estate steward, with the ledger entry household maintenance — Miss Hollybrook. Not Lady Ashcombe. I read it twice, because I thought the steward had made an error. He had not. Adrian had instructed it precisely.
Like the wages of a paid housekeeper.
It has come on the first of every quarter since, in the same hand, with the same entry, for twelve quarters. I have signed the receipt twelve times.
In all that time my husband has dined at my table thrice. None of those three were Christmas.
At the head of the gallery Julian is still smiling. He thinks I will weep now, or beg Adrian to acknowledge me, or faint — any of the soft female calamities that would let him take Adrian's seat at the trust meeting next month.
He does not understand that he is not here to defend my honour. He is here to weaponise it.
A man like Julian sees a pregnant wife in a corner and sees a club. He does not see that the club can be turned.
Adrian, at the head of the table, has not yet looked at me. When he does, finally, his eyes drop only to my stomach. They rest there for two seconds. Two — I am counting again.
Then he smiles.
I have not seen him smile in four months.
"There seems," he says, in the voice he keeps for ruining stable boys who have miscounted oats, "some doubt yet as to who put the child there."
The gallery goes still. My fingertips stop on the muslin.
He flicks the accoucheur's letter back toward Julian with one gloved knuckle. The paper slides, this time, without ceremony.
"I am willing to put it to the wager," he says, perfectly clear, perfectly level, perfectly audible to every painted earl. "Whether there is in fact anything in her belly worth the name."
In the half-second that follows I feel something inside me settle. Not break. Settle, the way silt settles in a pond when the wading boots have finally stopped.
It does not hurt. It only feels filthy.
Julian raises an eyebrow. He has the decency to look entertained rather than triumphant — he can afford the gesture, having watched the heir to the earldom set fire to himself on Julian's behalf.
"Cousin," he murmurs, "that is harsh language for one's own wife."
Adrian wipes his thumb along the edge of his glove as if he has touched something tacky.
"My wife," he repeats, the syllables tasted and discarded. "There is no entry under Carrow in the Ashcombe parish register. There is no settlement on file with Quilter's office under that name. A young woman walks about with a paper she calls a marriage line and assumes the door to Ashcombe Park will open. The door has not opened. She has slept in my Mayfair house at my charity for three years."
One of the elder Carrow cousins, three places down — old, deaf, terribly precise — strikes the table flat with his palm.
"Hang it, sir. Married or not? A plain answer."
Every face in the gallery turns toward me.
I do not move.
Behind Adrian, at the wall, stands Vivien Lyle. She is in a pearl-grey morning gown and the corners of her mouth are pressed inward to keep the smile from coming out. She has overseen the seating of this conclave. She chose the silver epergne. She told the housekeeper at what hour the candles should be lit.
She looks more like the Countess of Ashcombe than I ever have.
For three years she has known Adrian's diary; she has chosen his neckcloths through his valet; she has presided at his shooting parties at the foot of his table while I sat below the dowager. The household at Ashcombe Park calls her Mrs. Lyle with the soft tone of "ma'am." It calls me Miss Hollybrook with the bright tone of "the visiting Surrey relation."
For three years, every time my husband came home from his club too drunk to find his stairs, it was Vivien's footman who came to me with a sealed note in her hand:
Miss Hollybrook — his lordship is below in the carriage and the worse for brandy. Her ladyship would prefer the household not know. Pray come down.
Not "Lady Ashcombe." Miss Hollybrook.
I counted seventeen nights I helped him up the back stairs.
On the seventeenth, he was so drunk he caught my wrist on the second landing and held it to his chest. His eyes were shut. Vivien, don't go, he said.
I had written it down that night in my household journal — the date, the words, the half-conscious hand on my wrist. Three months later I tore the page out and burnt it.
Not because I could not bear to keep it.
The page was taking up room I needed for the apothecary's accounts.
The deaf cousin strikes the table again.
"Miss Hollybrook, since we are to call you that — is the child Lord Ashcombe's, or is it not?"
I look up. I look at Adrian.
He looks back at me with absolute certainty. He is certain that I love him. He is certain that I will weep. He is certain that in the next half minute I shall stammer out an explanation, beg him not to abandon his own child, lay my hands together on the boards and offer to disappear quietly into Surrey on a small allowance.
Three years ago, I was the woman who would have done exactly that. Three years ago he could spare me a glance over the breakfast tray and I would have warmed myself at it for half a day. When his gastric trouble flared, I rode out to four apothecaries in one night. When he ran a fever, I sat up till dawn with a basin of cool water and a folded cloth.
One cannot, however, mourn the same grave for three years running.
I reach into the reticule on the bench beside me and draw out a second sheet of cream paper.
Adrian's eyes move from my stomach to the paper. The certainty in them changes shape — not yet to fear; only to the realisation that the room is no longer doing what he has arranged.
I stand. I am steady. I walk the length of the refectory table — past the dowager, past Mr. Quilter at the wall — and I lay the second letter beside the first, in front of him.
"Dr. Margate examined me again this morning," I say. My voice does not raise. There is no need. "He distinguished two heartbeats on auscultation."
The gallery is very quiet.
"Twins, my lord. Both yours."
Adrian's gloved hand closes on the boards.
I reach into the reticule a second time. What I draw out now is a heavy folded leaf of buff parchment, very thick, with the heading of the parish register of St. Mary's, Nether Wyck, dated 14 November 1815. The signatures of the supposed bride and groom; the supposed witnesses; the supposed officiant, Curate Theakston. The Ashcombe muniments room holds a fair copy. This is the original — Theodore had it from the curate on Tuesday, the curate weeping and counting a second twenty pounds to make the loan.
I lay the leaf flat on the table.
"And, my lord —"
I take it in both hands.
The dry rip carries down the gallery. The folio tears unevenly along its centre fold — heavy paper does not tear cleanly — with a sound like a small bone breaking.
"— our marriage line was a forgery."
I drop the halves on the boards in front of him.
"There is no marriage. There never was."
