Sir Henry suspends the conclave.
He does it the way one closes a courtroom — without rising. Both Lord Ashcombe and Mr. Julian Carrow, he says, are to be considered set aside from the trust's voting until the trustees have heard particulars. The deaf cousin, recovering at last, makes a noise of approving outrage. The dowager Lady Helena, in her dried-blood pelisse, has not said one word the whole morning. She does not say one now. She watches me, only, and her watching has the quality of a knife being kept dry.
I leave by my own door at the end of the gallery, with my outriders. Julian comes after me into the gravel sweep, fast, his coat unbuttoned. He drives a shoulder into mine as he passes.
"Pray you keep about you a guard for the rest of your life, Miss Hollybrook."
The taller of Theodore's old Coldstream men has him by the wrist before I have to turn my head. Julian makes a high noise — pride, mostly; the wrist will not break — but the man holds it long enough to remind him whose body the bone belongs to today.
"Touch me again, Mr. Carrow," I say, without looking back at him, "and the other arm will be the next item of correspondence."
The Coldstream man releases the wrist. Julian goes off through the box hedge swearing under his breath like a stable boy.
Vivien comes out of the gallery on Adrian's elbow. Her face is composed again. She has tried to put her arm through his; he has not closed his to hold it.
"My lord," she is saying, low and gentle, "Miss Hollybrook is — she is in a passion, you cannot reason with — she is carrying your child and she has put on a performance —"
Adrian disengages his elbow without seeming to. He crosses the gravel and reaches my carriage step before I have set my foot on it.
His hand closes on my wrist.
He has, in three years, taken my hand twice. Once to lift me out of a curricle in 1816. Once on the seventeenth night, drunk. This is the third.
"The matter of the children," he says, low, "will be discussed."
I do not pull. There is no need to; one does not get away from Adrian Carrow by pulling. One gets away by being colder.
"There is nothing for us to discuss, my lord."
"Cecily."
The grip closes. His knuckles whiten.
"Those are my children."
I look down at his white knuckles on my wrist. I let myself look at them long enough that he, also, looks.
"An hour past," I say, "you informed your family it was not yet established whose children they were."
"That was said in anger."
I laugh, very quietly.
"My lord — your angry words come cheap. You cannot collect them back at full price after the stabbing."
His jaw sets.
Vivien tries again, softer, the practised soft. "Miss Hollybrook, his lordship has been driven to it — it is unkind in you not to have told him of your condition. You concealed —"
"Mrs. Lyle," I say, "I did not conceal it."
I take from the reticule one folded paper more.
"I wrote my lord of Ashcombe a letter the third week of August last. I asked him what I should tell the household if it transpired I was, as you would say, breeding. I have the answer he sent."
I unfold it.
It is on Ashcombe paper, sealed in his arms, written in a hand that is — to a wife who has had six letters from her husband in three years — sufficiently close.
Cecily, — Consult some discreet apothecary in Cheapside. The matter need not become public. — A.
I hold it out.
I do not give it to Adrian. I give it to Vivien.
She does not, for a moment, take it.
"You wrote it," I say. "He was lying delirious at Ashcombe with a torn shoulder and a fever and could not have held a pen. You wrote it on his paper, in a hand that took you a year of his letters to practise."
Her fingers, finally, close on the paper. She tries to make her face do its usual reasonable thing. The reasonable thing has stopped operating.
"I — I thought it must be — some impertinent person —"
"Mrs. Lyle," I say, "if you thought that, you would have shewn the letter to my lord when he was well, and let him answer it. You did not. You wrote, on his paper, in his name, an instruction to a woman three months gone with his child to seek out an apothecary in Cheapside known by name in the inquest reports as a procurer of abortion."
Adrian's hand has come away from my wrist. He is staring at the paper in Vivien's hand.
"My lord," I say to him, conversationally, "your woman of business killed one of your children for you. I thought you should know it before you came again to bargain for the others."
Adrian takes the paper from Vivien without looking at her. He reads it once. He reads it a second time, slower.
Vivien is making the noise the gentry's wives make at funerals — a soft repeated catching at the breath, with a handkerchief touched to one cheek and then the other. Tears come. They have come on cue from her, gracefully, for the eight years she has been waiting to be Adrian's countess in fact.
"My lord — I thought it must be importunate — you were so ill that week — Dr. Margate said any agitation would burst the wound — I meant —"
I clap my hands three times. Not loud. The Coldstream men do not turn. Adrian does.
"Bravo, Mrs. Lyle," I say. "Eight years' devoted service. You answer his lordship's private correspondence. You decide on his behalf whether his children live or die. You preside at the foot of his table. The position of Lady Ashcombe is the one piece of furniture you have not yet personally arranged."
She lifts her wet eyes to mine. The handkerchief comes down.
"You have no idea what I have given to this family. Eight years. I have ordered his linen and his wine and the gravel of his sweep. I sat up four nights with him when his shoulder turned septic. I —"
"Yes, Mrs. Lyle. So you have purchased him."
"I have loved him —"
"Eight years," I say. "You have loved him eight years. Did it not occur to you, in any of those eight, that the love did not by itself produce a deed of conveyance?"
Her breath hitches. Adrian, in three syllables that have always closed her tears at any wedding-breakfast or musical evening where he has wanted them closed, says: "Vivien."
For the first time in three years, the syllables do not work. The tears come harder.
Before today I would have stood very still while she wept. I would have known, the moment Adrian's brows came together, that I was about to become the unreasonable woman in the scene. The household at Ashcombe Park had a name for it — "Miss Hollybrook's temper."
Today I speak first.
"My lord, if you must pity Mrs. Lyle, do it back in town. I am with child, and I have no stomach this morning for watching mistresses cry."
Vivien's head comes up.
"You call me a mistress! There is no marriage between you — your own line was a forgery — I am no man's mistress —"
"Quite right," I say. "You are not even that."
The breath goes out of her.
Adrian's face has gone the colour of slate.
"Enough, Cecily."
"Not yet, my lord."
I turn from him and walk three paces to where Sir Henry Carrow has come, very quietly, out of the gallery door to listen. The old magistrate has his hands folded behind him. He has not been counted on by anyone in this house in twenty years. He is not, perhaps, displeased to be counted on now.
"Sir Henry. I beg leave to pass a message through you to every member of the Carrow family. From this morning, any person who privately approaches me — who threatens me, my mother, or my children, or who attempts harm — shall be referred to the Bow Street magistrate's office. Not to my lord of Ashcombe. Not to my lord's solicitor. Direct."
I draw one more paper from the reticule. It is the heaviest yet. The seal on it is not Carrow.
"This is the deed of trust drawn up by the late Lord Edmund in 1813. It is held at Pell and Burgh, Gray's Inn. My counsel will wait upon you tomorrow at eleven to enter it formally in the family record."
Sir Henry takes it. He has not been so much as offered a Pell and Burgh document in his life. He looks at the heading.
His old hand jerks, just slightly.
The Hollybrook–Ashcombe Trust.
The name has been a missing tooth in the Carrow muniments room for seven years. Adrian's father searched for it. Adrian has searched for it. It has been understood that the late earl, in his last year, settled a great sum on someone outside the line, and that no living Carrow knows whom.
Sir Henry's eyes lift to mine. "Miss Hollybrook —"
"Sir Henry."
"The Hollybrook–Ashcombe trust —"
"Was settled by his lordship's grandfather upon my mother." I let the word sit a moment. "And upon her line."
Adrian, behind me, has not moved. His eyes are on the heading of the deed in Sir Henry's hand.
I know perfectly well that he recognises it.
Adrian catches me in the carriage sweep before my coachman has the door shut.
He is bare-headed. He has come out of the gallery without his hat. The wind off the park is moving the dark hair at his temple, which is normally not permitted to move.
"Cecily."
I lean back against the cushion. The coachman waits.
"My lord?"
"Why does my grandfather's missing trust sit in your reticule."
"Ask him."
"He has been dead four years."
"He left his answer in writing. Your solicitor has had a copy since 1813. It is a great pity the muniments room is in such want of order."
He puts a gloved hand flat against the carriage door so the coachman cannot move us. He is breathing harder than the small exertion warrants. "Cecily — three years — three years of you under my roof, three years of —" The word he wants is not quite available. "You came to me for the trust."
"Yes."
He looks as if I have struck him.
A curious thing — a man who has kept his wife at the foot of his own table for three years finds himself, this morning, capable of being betrayed by her.
"My lord, your grandfather settled the trust upon my mother in '13. The conditions of the settlement are precise. The capital does not pass to her, or to me, except upon a single event."
"What event."
"The birth of two children of the direct Ashcombe line. Two. Not one."
His mouth opens, then closes.
"My lord, I needed a Carrow father. There were four candidates of suitable degree. Mr. Julian I will not insult either of us by discussing. Mr. Aubrey is consumptive. Mr. Tobias is a love-child without standing. That left you. You are well-made, your constitution sound, your understanding adequate."
I look at him a moment.
"Excepting your taste."
His jaw whitens.
"You consider me — that? — an instrument?"
"My lord," I say, "have you not been considering me a furnishing for three years?"
His knuckles are bone now where they rest on the carriage door.
"That night."
I know which night.
The autumn of 1815, a fortnight after the curate at Nether Wyck had taken his twenty pounds, he was thrown from a hunter on the upper field and ran a fever for two days. Vivien sat with him until midnight on each, then withdrew to her own house in the village (a respectable widowed cousin does not sleep under a single gentleman's roof). On the third night the fever climbed; the surgeon came with leeches; the household, in a panic, sent the chaise for me. I came up from London in the dark. I sat through the small hours with a cloth and a basin and a watch.
He woke under my hand near three. He was not entirely himself. He reached for me. I did not refuse him.
The next morning he opened his eyes and said, before any other thing: forget last night.
I never have.
I remember, also, that I had been marking the dates in my household journal for six months by then. I knew exactly which night to "not refuse."
"That night," he says again, "what was that."
I look at him. He is not a stupid man. He has worked it out already; he wants only to hear me say it.
"That night, my lord, you reached for me. I did not refuse you. That is the entire account."
The lines at the corners of his mouth deepen.
"You — you had marked the dates."
"Yes."
"In your journal."
"Yes."
A muscle moves in his cheek. I see, briefly, that under the cold there is a man, after all, who would like to put his fist through the carriage panel.
"And the children," he says, almost a whisper, "are an event of the trust."
"They are also my children, my lord. That is, oddly, the part you keep forgetting."
He stands back. I rap on the roof. The coachman starts.
Through the lowered window he says, hoarse: "When the children are born, I will require custody."
"My lord, you may try."
I put the window up.
In the side-glass I see him, once, before we round the gate-piers: standing in the sweep, his hand still half-raised, looking like a marble bust someone has struck across the cheek.
