A few days later Cass's people brought the Pruitts to the Greenwich foyer.
They had gone to ground in an underground card room above a barbershop in Revere. They owed five million dollars to four institutions, two of which had already begun collection. They came up the front steps of the estate of a daughter they hadn't seen in eighteen years, between two men in dark coats, with their hands flexing in and out of fists.
I had them put on the marble of the foyer. The same marble Margot had pointed across.
They went down on their knees on it the second the men let go of their elbows.
Doug was missing two molars on the bottom right; his cheek had folded inward where the teeth used to be. Sherry had a vape pen tangled in the strap of her purse. The two of them looked smaller than I had expected. People do, when you finally see them.
"Wren — sweetheart — baby — we're your parents, honey, we — we're family, we're blood, you — "
Doug was already crying. Sherry caught it from him.
"We didn't have a choice, baby. The hospital — they offered us — we were broke, you have no idea what it's like, we thought you'd have a better — "
"Better."
I looked down at them.
"You sold me for cash. Then you waited eighteen years and did it again with my sister."
"We were — we were trying to fix it — "
"Fix it for who."
I had them both down on the same marble Margot had pointed at me across. The symmetry was satisfying enough that I noted it and then moved on.
I took a folder from the man at my left. I held it out, open, where they could see.
"Five million dollars across three Atlantic City casinos and an offshore book in Antigua. As of this morning, those markers have been settled. Locke Capital paid them. You owed them. Now you owe me."
Doug's face changed.
"You — oh thank you, baby, oh thank you — you really are our daughter, you really are — "
"Don't thank me yet."
I closed the folder.
"Locke Capital recently acquired a controlling interest in a Liberian iron-ore concession through a fund called Tremont Resources. As of Monday, the two of you are going to Liberia as on-site field auditors. Your passports will be held by the operating company. Your salary will be garnished against the five million you owe me. When you've earned it back, you can come home."
The smile came off Doug's face slowly, the way wax does off a candle.
"No — no, baby, no, you can't — we're old, we're not gonna — "
Sherry was screaming now, low and constant. "We're your parents, you don't put your parents in a — "
"Take them out."
The two men I had hired didn't pull them up. They picked them up and walked them out the front door I had just bought back. Sherry's voice carried across the gravel and the lawn and got cut off when the door of the SUV closed.
I didn't watch the SUV go.
Some people don't deserve to be forgiven.
I went back to Locke Capital the next morning and turned to the Sheffields.
The Sheffields had spent the week believing what every Wall Street obituary writer believed about me: that I was a pretty pawn riding a violent man's win. That my real value to the company was the access I gave the family office to Beacon Hill drawing rooms. That I was a centerpiece.
Centerpiece. That was Margot's word, too.
I called Whitney Sheffield-Doyle on a Tuesday morning at 7:14. She had been three years above me at Choate and had not spoken to her father since a Thanksgiving I remembered hearing about. I had her father's Q4 internals on my screen before his own CFO did. We were on the phone for nineteen minutes. When she hung up I had her proxy and a list of two more directors' daughters to call before lunch.
Sheffield Industries came apart inside a month. The New Jersey pension fund that had been their largest LP quietly redeemed on a Friday. The Boston-area municipal contracts came up for review on Monday and went a different way. By Wednesday a 13D from a Locke Capital vehicle hit the wire at 8.4% with hostile intent, and Charles Sr. found out about it from a Bloomberg push notification while he was in line at the Wellesley Starbucks.
He called me that morning. I let it go to my assistant.
He drove up to the Greenwich gate himself on Thursday with a manila folder I could already guess was a settlement offer.
I did not see him. I had my assistant take the folder.
I had her tell him I had one condition.
If he wanted the Sheffields to keep operating, Bash had to come to my office and apologize to me himself.
In person.
Out of the chair.
Bash came on a Tuesday.
He came through the corner office door of Locke Capital — formerly Teddy's, now mine, the harbor view I had told my Choate roommate about — in a wheelchair pushed by an aide. His right leg was set and casted from ankle to hip. His face was thinner than I remembered. His eyes were colder than I had seen them go at any party for any reason.
"Wren."
He said it through his teeth.
"You know this is excessive."
"Excessive."
I came around the desk. I came to the front of it and stood with my back against the wood.
"Excessive was you sitting next to Annie at the Bruins event in pearls that belonged to Margot's grandmother. Excessive was you laughing at the Names columnist's joke about my trailer-park bones. Excessive was telling Boston Magazine, off the record, that I'd always seemed intense to you, that you'd always wondered if I was the one. That part, Bash, is the part where I had to pull over on Route 1 because I couldn't see the road."
"You really think you're still the girl who sat next to me at every Cotillion table since fifteen, telling me what to do?"
"Sebastian. Look around."
His eyes went over the office. The pen. The folder on the desk with his father's name on it.
"You think I'm the girl who tagged after you at every Cotillion table since fifteen?"
He didn't answer.
"Out of the chair."
He stared at me.
"What?"
"Get out of the chair. Onto the floor. Crawl from there to here and back two more times. Each time you reach the desk you say I was wrong. Three times. You do that and the Sheffields go on existing."
"You're insane."
He tried to get up. He had forgotten which side his cast was on. The aide caught him under the arm. He tried again, came halfway up, and went down sideways out of the chair onto his hip on the carpet, hard.
He pushed himself up onto the elbow of his good arm.
"My family doesn't grovel," he said, into the carpet. "We don't grovel. My grandfather flew over Korea, you don't get to — "
"Are you sure about your father?"
I picked up my phone off the desk. I dialed.
The line clicked. Cass picked up on the first ring.
"Start it."
"Done."
I hung up.
It took about six minutes. Bash's phone, on his belt, started ringing during the third minute. He got it out of the holster with his teeth. He answered it on speaker because he had to put it on the carpet to hear it.
"Bash — Bash, whatever she wants, give her what she wants, the New York office is dark, the wires are frozen, the Geneva account is — Bash, she has the keys to every door, give her what she wants — "
His father, crying, on speakerphone, on the carpet of my office.
Bash held the phone.
He looked up at me. His face had emptied out.
He pushed himself onto his hands and his good knee. The cast leg dragged behind him. He made it the first ten feet. He stopped. He pressed his forehead to the carpet next to my heel.
"I was wrong."
He pushed himself back. He turned around at the wall with the cast scraping the baseboard. He came back.
"I was wrong."
Once more. He took the longest at the end. He couldn't keep his elbow from shaking.
He pressed his forehead down a third time.
"I was wrong."
I watched him on the carpet at my feet and I felt nothing in particular. Just a clean, cold quiet.
"Get up."
He couldn't. The aide came in and got him into the chair. I let the aide do it. I didn't help.
"You can go."
I turned toward the harbor view.
The aide turned the chair around and pushed Bash out of the office. The door clicked.
Game over.
Every one of them — the people who had thrown me out, who had laughed at me, who had transferred the engagement and the gala and the family name to a girl whose only qualification was that she was someone else — had been served the bill that matched their order.
The harbor at dusk was the kind of pink that costs nothing.
I picked up the phone. I texted Cass.
I'm hungry.
It came back inside ten seconds.
Home. Waiting.
I took my coat off the back of the chair. I walked out through the corridor I had walked into as a child holding my father's hand. The receptionist at the marble desk in the lobby — different woman, my hire — said good night, Ms. Locke, and meant it.
I picked Cass up at the curb on Federal Street. I slid into the passenger seat of his car, put my hand through the crook of his elbow, and smiled at him.
"Cass. The game's just starting. Everything that was Winthrop, I want. Everything that was Sheffield, I want."
He looked at me. His eyes did the horizon-line thing.
"Yours."
He pulled away from the curb and added, after a beat:
"I'm yours too."
