The living room, an entire generation of Cranes had spent forty years curating to look like a Veranda shoot, briefly became a deposition.
Bennett: "Ash. You understand what you're saying."
Asher: "I do."
Theo, slowly, looking at me: "When did you contact him."
I would also have liked to know.
Asher caught my expression and answered, with the inflection of a person walking a junior associate through chain-of-custody:
"Last night you sent three emails out from your personal address. One went to Wexley Forensics' general-counsel intake. I read it before I went to bed."
I remembered. I had been cleaning my own backup files in the small hours, sending evidence in three directions for insurance — to my therapist, to a Wellesley friend who clerked at the AG's office, and to what I had thought was an automated intake address at the legal-tech company my fiancé happened to run. I had not been expecting the founder to personally read it.
He continued, evenly. "Sloane is my fiancée of record. Crane Holdings personnel have been instructing her to commit crimes against another member of this household. I have standing under the engagement contract and under the foundation's bylaws to intervene. I am intervening."
Cameron, with the strange high voice of a man losing altitude fast: "You hated her."
Asher allowed himself one half-second of looking at me. The skin at his collar moved.
"I'd misjudged her."
Atlas, in my ear, made a sound I had not previously known it could make. Static.
Perry, of all people, laughed once. She walked across the rug and stood next to me with her bag. She had not stopped holding herself with the new shoulders.
"Sloane," she said. "Can I crash at yours."
Mine was the attic room on the third floor of the house we were trying to leave. Mine was a twin bed and a Velux skylight and one outlet shared with a vintage Tiffany lamp.
I started to tell her no. Asher cut in.
"I have a place in Boston. Marlborough Street, Back Bay. Top floor, two bedrooms, full security. It's empty. Sloane and I can share keys. The building isn't on the Crane vendor list."
I gave him a look I usually reserved for door-to-door evangelists.
"Are you charging us rent."
Asher considered the question. "No."
"What do you want out of this, Wexley."
He held my gaze. He did not blink. He answered:
"I want you to stop jumping off boats."
Cameron's face darkened. "She's a Crane. You don't have to manage her."
Perry, dry: "Has any Crane managed her."
That stopped the room.
I tucked the manila folder under my arm. I felt — for the first time since I had woken up understanding what kind of evening Atlas had planned for me — that I had been handed a draft of a story that was not the one I had been issued.
Atlas, faint and very cold: Host. The script is non-negotiable. The endpoint will still arrive.
I looked at the three Crane brothers, who were standing in their living room watching a ward and a fiancé and a daughter walk out of it together. I looked at Asher's car keys on the coffee table.
Fine.
Let the endpoint try.
I'd rather rot in peace somewhere with a working radiator.
The Marlborough Street apartment was on the fourth floor of a brownstone older than the Republic. Wide-plank pine floors that had been refinished within an inch of their lives. A bow window looking out at gas lamps. A kitchen full of things neither of us had bought.
Perry stood in the foyer with her duffel bag and stared at the marble.
"Sloane. Are we going to owe Asher Wexley a kidney."
I opened the refrigerator. It was full. Greek yogurt. La Croix. A box of macarons from L.A. Burdick. A pint of lobster bisque from Neptune Oyster with the lid still sealed. The pantry had three brands of pasta and a tin of Maldon salt.
"No," I said. "He's the one percent. They owe us."
Perry laughed and fell onto the couch.
That night I slept for nine hours. Nobody woke me. There was no Bennett looking pointedly at me across the breakfast island. There was no Theo's gallery-opening playlist coming up through the floor. There was no Cameron banging the back door at three A.M. coming home from somewhere with a girl whose name he wouldn't remember.
At three A.M. Atlas woke me.
A pulse at my wrist. Sharp. The new kind. I sat up before I had finished waking.
The notification was on my phone screen on the nightstand.
HOST CHECK-IN.
*Endpoint protocol moved up. Required return to Greenwich tomorrow evening for family dinner. Non-compliance — *
Pain bloomed in the center of my chest. Sharp, articulate. As if someone had pressed a thumb against the vagus nerve at the throat and turned a dial. My ribs locked. For a second I could not get a breath in.
I gasped. The skin under the Atlas band went hot.
Perry was at my door in twelve seconds. "Sloane?"
I waved her off. The pain was already easing. I could see the dial coming back down through the haptic feedback at my wrist.
"Bad dream," I rasped.
She didn't believe me. She sat at the foot of the bed in her pajamas anyway, and didn't say anything, and didn't leave, until the sky started to gray.
The next morning, at eight-thirty, the buzzer rang.
I looked through the peephole. Bennett. In a Barbour over his shirt because it was forty-one degrees out. Holding a kraft-paper carrier with a rope handle. The kind from Pearl's Lobster Roll Co. in Wellfleet. The brown-butter ones. Six rolls in a white waxed-paper box, still cold.
He stood there for nine seconds before he raised his hand to knock.
Perry, behind me at the kitchen island, said, "Is that — "
"Pearl's. Yeah."
I didn't open the door.
She came over and looked through the peephole. Her mouth went flat.
"Sloane. He drove four hours."
"He drove four hours so he wouldn't have to apologize in words."
The brothers had taken Perry to Pearl's every August for ten years. A girls' weekend with Per. I had been told the SUV was full. I had been told there wasn't enough room in the cottage. I had been told they'd bring me back leftovers. The leftovers had never come back. Pearl's lobster rolls do not travel.
I opened the door.
Bennett held out the carrier. There were stitches at his — there were not stitches at his eyebrow yet. I noted, distantly, that the stitches happened later. We were not there yet. He just looked tired.
"You used to ask for these," he said.
I looked at the bag. I looked at him.
"Ben. That offer is about seventeen years late."
He let his hand drop slightly. He did not put the bag down.
Perry stepped past me, took the carrier out of his hands, and pushed it gently back into his chest.
"We're coming to dinner tonight," she said. "But not for you."
My father had been in Singapore for seven years. He had not come back for my college graduation. He had not come back for the foundation's twentieth anniversary. He had not come back when I had what the family communications team had called my "incident" sophomore year.
He came back for this.
Carter Hartwell Crane III. Sixty-two. Yale '85, Harvard Law '88. Principal of the Crane family office, Singapore. He had landed at Logan that morning on a red-eye, taken a town car to Greenwich, and was sitting at the head of the formal dining table in a suit he had not changed out of, with the look of a man inspecting a balance sheet.
The dining room had eighteenth-century wallpaper that Eleanor had picked out the year before she died.
Perry and I came in together. The three brothers were already seated. Bennett was looking at the table. Theo's neck was red. Cameron was studying his bread plate.
My father did not stand. He looked up. His first sentence to me, after seven years, was:
"Apologize. On your knees. Now."
I had set the surveillance folder Asher had given me on the table at the seat next to his.
I did not look at it.
"Mr. Crane," I said politely. "Could you read the materials at your left before we start the part with the kneeling."
His mouth went thinner.
Bennett, very carefully: "Dad. The situation isn't — "
"The Crane family has put a roof over her head for twenty-three years," my father said. "She has spent her week broadcasting drug-tampering allegations against her brothers to the Boston press. Does the situation require any more information than that."
Perry was on her feet before I was.
"Mr. Crane. Sloane didn't do anything wrong."
He looked at her. His face softened by precisely one degree.
"Perry. You're a kind girl. You don't see the calculation in her."
I sat down. I pushed the folder across the table to him with two fingers.
He looked at it. He looked at me. He opened it.
Audio transcript of the gala. Stills from the Whitney. The yacht recording, transcribed and notarized. The chain of custody on each.
He read for nine minutes. The room sat in it.
When he closed the folder, I had braced myself, in some buried civic part of myself, for an apology.
Instead, he picked the folder up, and threw it at Bennett.
The metal clip clipped Bennett's right brow. Blood beaded immediately and rolled down to the corner of his eye.
"Imbecile."
Bennett didn't move.
My father turned back to me. His face had the exact specific shape it had had during the Q3 board meetings he ran from Singapore on Zoom, when an analyst had let bad numbers reach a reporter.
"You had evidence," he said. "Why didn't you bring it to me privately. Why did you let it become something the Globe could run."
There it was.
The thing I had been waiting nineteen years to hear, said out loud, in my father's own voice, at his dining table.
In this family, the cardinal sin was being seen.
Not what was done.
I felt, distantly, my mouth pulling into a smile.
Perry, half-trembling: "Is that all you care about. Whether it's public."
My father did not look at her.
"That isn't your conversation."
A new voice from the dining room doorway, mild and dry as a deposition transcript:
"Is it mine?"
Asher Wexley walked in. Behind him: two suited attorneys from his firm. Behind them: a uniformed Greenwich detective.
Asher looked at my father.
"Mr. Crane. We're submitting formal evidence regarding criminal solicitation by members of Crane Holdings, the unlawful electronic restraint and coercion of Ms. Sloane Crane via a medical device installed by the family's concierge medicine provider, and a number of related counts. We'd like a moment with you."
