My father did not panic. He had been a Crane for sixty-two years. Cranes do not panic in dining rooms; they panic in the back hallways afterward, off-camera.
He looked at Asher Wexley as if Asher were a junior associate making an extremely poorly judged career decision.
"Mr. Wexley. You'd burn the Wexley family relationship with this one for a girl."
Asher: "Not for her. For the evidence."
I gave him a small private clap under the tablecloth.
Atlas, in my ear, in a register I had not heard before — bright, cold, slightly metallic, like an old answering machine:
Host. Narrative deviation has now exceeded all permitted thresholds. Forced correction will execute outside the home in the next nine minutes. Please proceed to the back service gate.
The chandelier above the dining table flickered once.
Outside the windows, thunder rolled.
A nor'easter. The forecast had not predicted one. But of course it had not. The forecast had not been writing this story.
The detectives moved my father to the side library to take his statement. The two attorneys cornered the brothers in the morning room with separate counsel. I excused myself to use the powder room.
In the powder room, Atlas tightened around my wrist.
The chest pain came back. Worse, this time. I felt my left arm go briefly numb. I caught the edge of the marble sink.
Service gate. Now.
I tried not to move. The pain dialed up another click. The numbness reached my fingers. I felt my lungs fail to fill the way lungs are supposed to.
I bit through my lip and walked out the back hallway.
The service gate at Hartsmere is a quarter-mile from the house, past the carriage house and the kitchen garden, at the end of the original servants' drive. It is brick. There is a brass call box that does not work. The road outside it is a single-lane state road that floods at every nor'easter.
The rain was coming sideways.
A black Chevy Suburban was idling on the road shoulder with its parking lights on. Tinted plates. The driver's window rolled down.
I recognized him.
Marcus Tate. Sixty. My father's longtime personal assistant. The man who had handled the paperwork after my mother's "allergic reaction" at the spring gala. The man whose name lived in eight pages of the Wexley Forensics file under fixer.
The Suburban was the same Suburban from the book.
"Ms. Crane," Marcus Tate said politely. "Get in."
I turned. I ran.
Behind me — the rear doors of the Suburban opening, two men in dark jackets coming out into the rain.
I heard Perry's voice through the storm before I saw her. "Sloane! Let her go!"
She was running down the servants' drive in stockinged feet, my coat over her arm. Asher was twenty feet behind her with his phone to his ear, dialing for the detectives at the house.
Atlas hummed at my wrist. Host. Compliance.
A hand closed on my shoulder. Another on my forearm. They were turning me toward the Suburban's open door.
The Suburban's engine roared.
I would understand, later, that Marcus had decided I was no longer worth the kidnap. That with witnesses he had defaulted to the original ending — the one in the book — the hit-and-run.
The car came toward us in a wet straight line.
I tried to push Perry. I had time to push Perry.
I did not have time to push myself.
Something hit me from behind with the force of a linebacker, fast and hard and unbelievably stupid, and we went rolling sideways into the wet ivy at the base of the brick wall.
The Suburban took the corner of the brick column instead of us. The crash was loud enough that I felt it through the ground.
I opened my eyes. Bennett was on top of me. Blood from his eyebrow was running into his hair. His right shoulder was at the wrong angle. His face was very close to mine.
His voice was hoarse.
"Sloane. You're okay. You're okay."
Atlas, in my ear, glitched. Static. A long stretch of dead air.
Then, quietly:
Bennett got a mild concussion, a fractured ulna, four stitches over the right eyebrow, and the kind of seventy-two-hour hospital admission rich men's families demand even when the attending wants to send them home.
Theo and Cameron sat in the chairs outside his room and did not speak to each other.
Perry took me to the urgent-care side of the same hospital and stayed there while a PA cleaned the road rash on my elbow and forearm. Asher stood at the window of the consult room making low cold phone calls.
"Run the registered owner. Run the offshore account. Run every domestic helper the Cranes have employed since 2007."
I watched him work. I felt, for the first time, the thing he had answered Cameron with at the Marlborough Street apartment.
I'd misjudged her.
Past tense. With work.
Half an hour later, Bennett came out of post-op. They moved him to a room on the fourth floor. Theo came and got me at the urgent-care window.
"He's been asking for you."
I followed Theo down the corridor. Cameron was leaning against the wall outside the room. He nodded at me — actual eye contact, not the deflected version — and stepped aside.
Bennett was propped up in a hospital bed, left arm in a sling, scalp half-shaved on one side for the stitches. He looked thirty years older than he had at breakfast.
I stood at the foot of the bed.
"Ben. Did the concussion finally rewire something."
He laughed a little. The laugh cost him. He winced.
"Probably it was rewired the wrong way for a while."
I didn't say anything.
He stared at the ceiling tile.
"The year Mom died," he said, slowly, the way a person climbs stairs with a broken arm, "I was twelve. Dad said the family couldn't afford another fragile one. He said it at the funeral. Out loud."
I waited.
"After you came along — you cried a lot, as a baby. You were six months old. I remember Dad looking at you in a bassinet and saying you had her face and her — her something. I don't remember the word. And then he just decided not to like you. I watched him do it."
He turned his head toward me. The eye not under the bandage was very tired.
"I learned not to like you because he didn't. I am thirty-four years old and that is the entire reason I have spent twenty-two years being short with you."
He breathed.
"Sloane. I'm sorry."
I felt the room wait.
Late apologies, I had once written in a therapy journal, are a particular kind of pharmaceutical. They are expired by the time they reach you. You can swallow them. They will not fix the original injury.
"Ben. I don't accept it."
He nodded against the pillow. He didn't argue.
"Okay."
Out in the corridor, I heard a small dry sound — Theo's intake of breath. Cameron had turned his back to the door so I couldn't see his face.
Perry's hand slid around mine.
I had expected, at some level, to feel triumphant.
I felt tired.
Atlas was supposed to be silent now. The system that had run my mornings for two years had been static since the service gate. The Wexley security team had moved my Apple Watch into a Faraday box in Asher's car.
In the elevator going down, sitting against Perry's shoulder, I felt — for the first time, faint, the way a radio comes back after a tunnel — a notification ping.
Not on my wrist. On my phone.
Atlas. From a process I had not given permission to run.
Hidden module unlocked. Backup voice memo set, dated September of your sophomore year. The host who recorded these wanted you to live. She did not, in the end, get to. You can.
I closed my eyes.
It would be much later, in Wellfleet, that I would have a forensic engineer at Wexley Forensics walk me through what that meant — that Atlas's "wellness module" had been trained on six months of voice memos I had made during the worst stretch I had ever survived, that the model had been quietly hosting a version of me I had stopped being, that whatever had been in my ear all these years had not only been my father's HR script, it had also been the version of me that had decided, at twenty, to make it through the night.
It would not matter what the engineer called it.
