Chapter 6

Confirmed Orange

The Suburban driver's offshore wire took the Wexley forensic accountants four days to map. The trail ran through eight shell companies and three jurisdictions and resolved, with embarrassing inevitability, at an account inside the Singapore family office under signatory authority of one Marcus Tate.

Carter Hartwell Crane III was arrested by federal agents on a Wednesday morning on the front lawn of the Greenwich estate, in front of a Globe metro photographer whom Asher's PR firm had tipped.

My father was led down the slate path between the boxwood hedges in handcuffs. He did not look at the cameras. He looked, once, at me.

"You're like your mother," he said, mildly. "A nuisance."

Bennett — fresh from the hospital, his arm in a clean sling — moved as if to hit him. Cameron caught Bennett by the good shoulder. Theo stepped forward as if to put himself between my father and me, which was the closest he had come to a sincere gesture all year.

I let none of it land on my face.

I said, evenly:

"Good."

Two days later, Asher came over to the Marlborough Street apartment with a second manila folder. Thicker.

He set it on the kitchen island in front of me. Perry came to stand at my elbow. She did not let go of my wrist.

"Sloane," Asher said. "Your mother didn't die of a reaction."

I had known. At some level under the level of words. I had known since the Whitney, when I had seen Theo's caption in his own hand.

But I let him say it.

He laid out the file in pieces. A retainer letter from a divorce attorney in May 2008 — Eleanor Tinsley Crane, Petitioner. Custody draft petitions for two minor children: Bennett Hartwell Crane, age seventeen; Sloane Tinsley Crane, age six. A forensic accounting note flagging anomalous transfers out of the foundation's grant operating account in the same quarter. An EMT report from the gala night with an annotation flagging the epinephrine response as inconsistent with a true anaphylactic event.

And — placed last, like a receipt — a wire transfer dated seventy-two hours before the gala, from the Singapore office, to a Greenwich-based numbered account owned by Marcus Tate. Memo line: spring services.

I looked at it for a long time.

Perry's grip on my wrist had gone bloodless.

Asher, gently:

"Perry's adoption — eighteen months later — wasn't kindness. Her mother had been your mother's closest friend. She had also seen the divorce file. She died in a single-car accident six months after Eleanor did. Carter brought Perry in to control what she had. Her resemblance to your mother was — useful, secondary. The cover was that your mother was being grieved here. The mechanism was that Perry was being kept here."

Perry made a small noise. I tightened my fingers around her hand.

"And your brothers' favoritism," Asher said. "Their entire developmental architecture. Wasn't theirs. Was your father's."

I looked out the bow window at the gas lamps on Marlborough Street.

I had been raised, my entire life, inside a cover story.

The cult my brothers had grown up around — the family-as-shrine — had not been a private dysfunction. It had been a homicide cover.

Atlas, since the elevator, had not pinged once.

Bennett came to the apartment that evening with the second batch of stitches still pink at his eyebrow. He stood in the foyer and said, "Sloane. Come home. There won't be anyone left in that house to make you do anything."

Theo, beside him, quieter: "I redid your room. The third-floor one. I moved you to the second floor."

Cameron, hovering at the door, eyes red: "I'll eat whatever you don't want me to eat. Just — don't be done with us."

Perry stood on one side of me. Asher stood on the other.

I looked at the three of them.

"The Cranes," I said, "aren't my family."

The color went out of all three of them in sync.

I picked up the manila folder. I held it to my chest.

Eleanor Tinsley had grown up in Wellfleet. Her grandmother's cottage on Bound Brook Island Road had been left to her, then put into a trust for me, then forgotten by everyone in the family except a property manager in Provincetown.

I drove up alone. Perry came two days later with a duffel bag and a copy of a cookbook called Coastal Comfort she had bought at a roadside farm stand. She tried to make clam chowder. The kitchen looked, briefly, like a crime scene.

"Per. The clams aren't supposed to come out of the bisque like that."

"I am trying."

I watched her scrub butter off the ceiling. Her hair was up in a clip my mother had owned. She'd found it in a kitchen drawer.

Asher came up three times.

The first time, he brought a paralegal and a folder of additional case work.

The second time, he brought me a new phone — one not linked to anything any Crane had ever administered.

The third time, he stood at the screen door of the cottage with a small bouquet of beach roses and a takeaway box from L.A. Burdick. The tips of his ears were pink.

"I was in the area."

"Mr. Wexley. Is your firm headquartered offshore now."

Perry, from inside, lost it.

We had, eventually, signed the dissolution of the engagement. I had asked for it. He had been quiet for a long time. He had signed.

After he signed, he set the pen down on the kitchen table and looked at me.

"May I court you. Properly. From a standing start."

I considered it.

"Get in line."

"How many people are ahead of me."

I counted them out on my fingers.

"Me. Perry. My mother's case. The LSAT review I haven't opened. And a cat I'm picking up Tuesday."

He nodded gravely.

"I'll wait."

The brothers came up one at a time.

Bennett came first. He brought a banker's box of my mother's old things — letters, a sweater, the Tiffany lamp from the third-floor attic. He stood on the porch in the cold for almost four hours because I made him stand there for almost four hours. He did not knock twice. When I opened the door, he handed me the box and said, "I won't ask to come in." I did not invite him in.

Theo came second. He brought a framed graphite sketch. It wasn't Perry. It wasn't our mother. It was me — at the kitchen island, eating an orange, hair in my face, mouth open in a half-laugh. He'd done it from memory.

Cameron came third. He brought a paper grocery bag.

"I checked," he said, very seriously. "WebMD says you can't eat anything spicy for forty-eight hours after jumping off a boat into cold water."

"Cam, it's been a month."

"Yeah but I wanted to be sure. So I just got Cape Cod Kettle Chips. The kettle kind. Sloane, you eat these."

I closed the door on him.

He stood out there shouting. "Pretzels? Sloane. Pretzels are okay, right? Pretzels are basically bread."

Perry, dying on the couch.

I laughed too.

It was not forgiveness. I was very clear about that, with myself, in the long blue afternoons. It was that I did not have to live anymore on the fuel of hating them. That was the part that had been costing me.

The state opened a homicide case against Carter Hartwell Crane III. Marcus Tate took a plea and named names. The foundation board, in a maneuver Bennett orchestrated in lieu of jail time for himself, voted to remove Carter from all trust signatories and reroute the grants program through an independent ethics committee.

On the morning of the indictment hearing, the sun was thin and clear over the Cape. I drove down to Boston with Perry in the passenger seat and a thermos of coffee in the cupholder.

I sat in the gallery. Perry held my hand. Asher sat one row back, in a different suit from the last one. The three brothers stood in the back of the courtroom with the rest of the press pool and the foundation's lawyers and did not come up the aisle.

After the indictment was read, we walked out onto the courthouse steps in the late October sun.

Asher handed me a hot oat-milk latte. Perry stole a sip of it and made a face.

"Too sweet."

"Sweet is fine."

Across the plaza, the three brothers stood in a loose triangle. Bennett, healed at the eyebrow, nodded at me — small, formal, a peer's nod, not a brother's. Theo, his eyes red, gave me a quick crooked smile and looked at the cobbles. Cameron kicked at a step like he had been the one in trouble.

I did not nod back. I did not need to. I had not, on the way out, been asked to.

I took Perry's arm. Asher fell in beside me on my other side.

"Sloane," he said, "are we still going to look at the cat."

"We are."

"What's the cat's name."

"Marmalade."

"Confirmed orange?"

"Confirmed orange."

The wind came up Tremont Street. A few late leaves came down on the bricks.

I am not, anymore, the assigned villain in someone else's bestseller.

I am not anyone's sister, anyone's fiancée, anyone's tidy little control variable.

I am Sloane Tinsley Crane.

I would, given the choice, very much like to rot in peace.

But if anyone ever again hands me a small sharp instrument and tells me what to do with it —

I'll turn it around, smile, and hand the handle back.
